With 4th of July weekend quickly approaching, communities across the country are preparing for a long holiday weekend that includes travel, fireworks, BBQs, beaches, and all that our beautiful state has to offer. Celebrating our Independence Day is not only one of the busiest days of the year but it has also been proven to result in more injuries than any other holiday, including New Year’s Eve.  Here are the most common types of accidents and how to avoid them.

DUI Accidents: Statistics gathered over the past 25 years by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have determined that an average 51% of all deadly traffic accidents on 4th of July are alcohol related.  Sunny states also add to the effects of alcohol due to dehydration and drowsiness from the heat.  There is only one tried and true method to avoid a DUI Accident, never get behind the wheel of a car while under the influence.

Car Accidents: According to the National Safety Council, as many as 409 people will be killed on the road during 4th of July weekend with another 49,500 injured.  Necessary precautions can help ensure a memorable weekend as well as the ability to lower these statistics.

Here’s how motorists can avoid an accident:

  • Always buckle up.
  • Place children in appropriate safety seats.
  • Reduce your speed.
  • Do not text or talk on the phone while driving.
  • Avoid late night driving.
  • If you are traveling by car, plan your route carefully.
  • Do not drink and drive.
  • Make plans for a designated driver.

Fireworks: 4th of July would not be complete without the annual ritual of a good fireworks show. Although public fireworks are in almost every city, many people opt for the “do it yourself” method which can result in fires, property damage, and serious injuries.  According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, fireworks often result in various types of injuries to include burns, contusions, lacerations, and foreign objects in the eye.  Here are some safety tips when handling fireworks:

  • Keep a bucket of water close for emergencies.
  • Douse fireworks with water before discarding.
  • Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks.
  • Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.
  • Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.
  • Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.
  • Hold fireworks away from face when lighting.

Forward thinking and sobriety can help save your life or the lives of those around you.  If you have been in an accident call The Accident Guys at 877-888-GUYS and we’re here to help…every step of the way.
